Vintage Baubles for Me; Vintage Decorations for my House

Here are a few things I purchased over the last week from garage sales and the thrift store.  I am still finding vintage jewellery to add to my collection.  Below is a golden Coro brooch, a red enamel one, and a strand of tiny irregular pearls.
I've already worn the pearls several times, and the Coro brooch once.  At the same garage sale I found this good quality bedskirt, so I paid $15.50 for the lot.
Perhaps that is a little much, but I was already looking for a bedskirt for my newly repainted bedroom and didn't think I could find anything close to this at conventional stores.
At a different garage sale I came home with something that I didn't need....
....this plastic, orange, mushroom-shaped 70s lamp.  I am a sucker for the colour orange, and since such things are so rare, I couldn't leave it behind.  Afterwards I told Hus I had buyer's remorse and he wondered how much I had paid for it.  When I replied "three dollars" he looked relieved and reassured me that it was a neat find for that amount of money.  It is now residing in our office, and I expect it will stay there.

During the week I visited the thrift shop and found two plates for the decorating project I want to do in our stairwell.
The top one is Myott, English china that I am unfamiliar with.  Don't you think it looks like a contemporary design?  But the stamp on the back looks like it is from the 1960s or 1970s.  And the bottom one is Kathie Winkle; the pattern is Calypso. A dollar each.
And finally I threw in these .25 vintage cupcake toppers.  (or at least that's what I assume they are)
I guess that commits me to making cupcakes next Valentine's Day!

I am linking this post of my thrifted finds to Flea Market Finds over at the blog 'Her Library Adventures.'

English China Thrifts

The majority of things I found thrifting in Vancouver last week were clothes for work.  I got some good deals and will post about those later.  I did find some more Kathie Winkle china.  Even though this is not the Broadhurst pattern I'm collecting, I thought that an alternate pattern  of side plates thrown into the mix would be fun!
I haven't blogged about it yet, but I also found another piece of Hornsea Saffron Pottery.  This time a vinegar cruet for .50 cents.

The Motherload

I think I've mentioned several times in this blog that I am collecting Kathie Winkle dishes, like the ones my family had when I was small....well, this weekend I hit the motherload!  Hus and I were down in Coquitlam and on the bus, when I wistfully said that a Value Village was coming up.  Hus asked if I wanted to stop, so we did.  As we were walking in he mentioned that he hadn't been in a Value Village for over ten years.  Immediately inside the door was the housewares.  I was looking high and low and said "have a look if you see any dishes in that pattern I'm collecting" and Hus immediately said "like these?"  I looked up and he was pointing to a massive pile of the very dishes!
And the dishes were all marked at .99 cents each, which is a bargain for Value Village!  Some of them were in very good condition and some were quite marked up, so I was a little choosy.  We came away with 4 cups and saucers, 6 side plates, 6 bowls and 6 dinner plates!  Hus is a good luck charm!  But, for my family who reads this blog; I would ideally like a set of 10-12, so please keep looking.

Dinner Parties and Dinnerware

Last night we had a fabulous dinner at a friend's house.  We made a shrimp pizza to bring over, and they provided a delicious mushroom pasta.  The shrimp and the mushrooms were local. For dessert, they also brought out local pears, served on Kathie Winkle side plates.  Which reminded me that I thrifted three dinner plates during August, but never posted about them.  Remember from this post, that I was going to keep my eye out for them?  Here they are...

I won't start using them until I have collected a few more, but one thing that strikes me about these dishes is how small they are compared to modern dishes.  These dinner plates are probably 3/4 the size of the ones I am currently using (which are almost two decades old themselves!), and the side plates we used last night are about half the size.

On a sort of related note, we are hosting a dinner party tonight.  Lately, I've been caught up with watching the UK's "Come Dine with Me" and Canada's "Dinner Party Wars."  So, I've decided to make a three course meal as an homage to these shows - but don't expect my guests to rate me!  For a starter: Harvest Salad with goat cheese and pears; for the main: Panko-crusted oven-fried Halibut with homemade Tartar Sauce, new potatoes and an heirloom tomato salad, and a plum cake with whipped cream for dessert.  We are eating quite early, so I can shoo the guests out to watch the season premier of Dexter - but hopefully it won't be that obvious to guests!  I guess I'd better get at it, since my viewing of these TV shows have taught me that a dinner party requires sufficient preparation!

Old Dishes from my Childhood

Yesterday, I posted about re-purchasing the dishes my family had in the 1980s.  While they make me feel nostalgic, I am really on the lookout for the dishes my family had in the 1970s (and used as camping dishes in the 1980s).  And apparently many other people covet these mid-century lovelies, because the online prices are really high considering that many people had these! They are a Kathy Winkle Broadhurst pattern, and I finally found a piece at the thrift store.
My mom says she still has the platter, so I'll have two pieces soon.
